The horses this year seemed young, fresh and bit aggressive, so mind them. A must -do is kayak (right off the causeway to the island) - those guys are great and friendly and you can accommodate to your own time frame and experience level. We would have rented a pop-up from Coastal Campers, but they don't have pet friendly units anymore. The mosquitos weren't biting yet, but there was a big problem with ticks - all of us got bit, and we all use repel insecticide (i use an equine formula, endure, on the dog, which is great). Well I loved it when I got flooded last year despite all, so needless to day, I love it more when I'm warm and dry. Believe it or not, my massive tent of last year actually had the poles snap and splinter under the heavy and stormy ocean winds. I would definitely go back if I could be assured of better weather.Īfter the heaven/hell experience with storms, sunshine and rainbows last August (2009), I returned again to Assateague for Memorial Day with a canvas tent with 1" diameter poles.

The morning came with drizzling weather and we checked the weather forecast on our weather radio and the wind was supposed to get quite high that night, so we packed early and went home. The twilight and wind made for an exhilarating experience. I awoke around 3 am and took the dogs to the beach.

We were luck as our tent was free of any leaks and was unaffectted by the wind. The wind during the night was quite high and many tents and things were blown away or damaged. the second night as we were cleaning up after dinner, a squall came and we were unable to close up before most things got wet. The leash law is lenient as there isn't anyone patrolling in the national section of the beach.

The beach at Assateague is huge, the shallow water is full of shells and rocks, so bring your water shoes. We experienced mild winds the first night and a wonderful day at the beach the next day. The bugs were not as bad as I had heard, but that may have to do with the wind. Setup went well and we had a nice afternoon. We had a high and dry campsite in loop2 #14. We intend to try it again but with a different mindset and equipment. We arrived to a torrential downpour and waited until it subsided. Oh yeah, I had thought sleeping between the dunes would have offered more protection but when sun set the mosquitoes there were terrible. Considering the intensity of the storm I was surprised that the Rangers did not do a wellness check in the morning. We finished the night out in our cars, retrieved our belongings in the morning, threw the destroyed tents dumpster and booked a motel. Went to sleep listening to the surf but woke up to a raging storm that destroyed two of our 3 tents. Spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the ocean and horses. In our experience we fought wind to set up 3 tents.

Storms at the shore are unpredictable and often pass by however if severe storms are forecast stay elsewhere. Plan on eating out of a cooler to avoid needing firewood and everything necessary to cook. You will need a flashlight, minimal clothing, possibly a chair, sunscreen, and bug spray with DEET. Don’t bother with baby powder or brooms for sand, plan on it being everywhere. Take plastic grocery bags to use as sandbags to hold your tent down. Your tent should be small and sturdy and easy to set up in Gail force winds. 1) Carrying everything through the sand from the parking lot to your tent is exhausting. If you choose to attempt this here is what we determined to be important. Almost nothing we were told or read prepared us for this adventure. We read all the tips for camping on sand and all were experienced campers. We planned for sometime to primitive/tent camp on the beach. Our group consisted of five adults and a seven-year-old.
